bridging worlds:
ian gregory sadler

To be "open" is our opportunity today.  It is the gift of our times. The focus is on "quality" in musical values. That demands a great deal of responsibility in perceptions.  Everything is available for attention, most of all the unknown. This unknown is inside of us and infinite.

There is so much richness in the perception of tonality which is an area much forgotten in recent years. To neglect such an important element impoverishes a musical effort.

Ditto the "feel" in rhythm. In my early years, a teacher played a tape of log drummers from Africa. Rhythm should feel that good.

I like beauty in a sound, from a voice or an instrument. If you combine this beauty in a tonality resonance with rhythms that feel good, then you've got some basis for a magical experience. It refreshes the soul.

When I'm writing for symphony orchestra, I'm always trying to resonate and refresh the souls of the players, to give them a happy day. The audience can feel that joy. That's what it's all about!  Because we humans need to experience this "Muse" which is inside. It is almost as important as dinner!

In playing the flute, I believe this Muse is coming through quite strongly, with "me" functioning only as "quality control" in the musical values. It is the feeling in that sound that can be a point of sharing with you, because we both are made from this Muse.
